Tibetan Buddhist Pujas in Laguna Beach | Medicine Buddha Puja | Oct 11

TIBETAN BUDDHIST PUJAS IN LAGUNA BEACH
Medicine Buddha Puja
Wednesday, Oct 11
7:30 – 8:30 p.m.

A puja held at OM Meditation Studio.

All are welcome to join Gonpo Ludup Study Group in a Medicine Buddha, or Healing Buddha, puja at OM Laguna Beach. We will make prayers and dedicate to the peace and well-being of our local community, friends, family and loved ones and for all communities suffering around the world. We also always dedicate for those who are sick or dying or who have recently passed away.

The lamas say that Medicine Buddha is the manifestation of the healing energy of all enlightened beings.

If you are unable to attend, you are welcome to email the names of your friends and loved ones to Kate Macdonald: kate@gonpoludup.org. We will include them all in our prayers..

“The seven Medicine Buddhas manifested in order to pacify theobstacles to the achievement of temporary happiness, liberation and the ultimate happiness of full enlightenment,” says the great Tibetan Buddhist Yogi Lama Zopa Rinpoche spiritual director of FPMT. “They are powerful in healing diseases as well as for purification. The Medicine Buddha practice can be used to help purify those who have already died and liberate them from suffering. It is also very powerful in bringing about success, both temporary and ultimate.”

All are welcome. No experience necessary.

You are welcome to bring offerings of food, fruit, flowers for the altar. Otherwise just bring yourself!

A free event, offered by Gonpo Ludup.

Friday Night Online Dharma Talk with Tubten Pende | An Introduction to Emptiness | Nov 17

Save the date! Registration to come. One of our international online classes. Anyone around the world can register and join from their computer in their own home. You can check the time Pende’s class will take place at your location here.

“Tubten Pende is one of FPMT’s most senior teachers,” says Merry Colony, director of Milarepa Center in Vermont and former director of FPMT Education. “As a monk Pende studied with Khensur Jampa Tegchok at both Manjushri Institute and Nalanda Monastery for many years. Pende was instrumental in getting FPMT’s Masters Program off the ground and headed up FPMT’s Education Department in the 1990s. Later he was one of the FPMT senior teachers invited to help formulate the Discovering Buddhism program. Since its inception, Pende has been involved with the program, first as a teacher of module 12, the Wisdom of Emptiness, and later as an elder for the DB online forum and assessor for DB certificate students. Pende has always stood out as an exceptional teacher of all topics, but most especially emptiness, having the very sharp analytical mind necessary for delving deeply into this profound topic. Pende’s presentations are always exceptionally clear and to the point.”

AN INTRODUCTION TO EMPTINESS
The Buddha taught that all our experiences – whether happy or unhappy ones – originate in the mind with the intentions that motivate our actions. Whether our actions are proactive or reactive, they all involve the awareness of ourselves responding to our outer or inner environment. Consequently, our view of ourselves is crucial in determining the quality of our interactions and experiences. The Buddha identified a common flaw in how we view ourselves that leads to isolation, selfishness, other destructive emotions and unhappiness. Removing that flaw is the purpose of his teaching on the emptiness of that wrong view’s projection.

ABOUT PENDE
Tubten Pende, a.k.a. Jim Dougherty, has been a practicing Buddhist since 1972 when he was introduced to Tibetan Buddhism in India. Pende was included in the first wave of FPMT’s Western Buddhist teachers. He was the coordinator of the Geshe Studies Program at Manjushri Institute in the UK; spiritual program coordinator, director, and later resident teacher at Nalanda Monastery in France; and an FPMT International Office Education Services program developer of the Masters Program at Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa in Italy. He is interested in the effective application of Buddhist theory and practice in the daily life of ordinary people.

“Tubten Pende is an old friend and fellow student of Lama Thubten Yeshe,” says FPMT teacher and Buddhist nun Ven. Robina Courtin. “We studied together years ago. He’s a scholar and a practitioner, and I highly recommend his teachings.”

“I first met Pende at the fifth Kopan course in the fall of 1973 – he’d been studying at the Tibetan Library in Dharamsala – and was immediately impressed by his intelligence and appreciation of the Dharma,” says Dr. Nicholas Ribush, director of FPMT‘s Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive. “We were ordained together a couple of months later and he then went on to study in great depth, especially with the late Khensur Jampa Thekchog at Nalanda Monastery, to become one of the most learned and respected teachers in the FPMT. Students can learn a lot from him.”

Tibetan Buddhist Meditation in Laguna Beach | Tara Meditation | Oct 18

TIBETAN BUDDHIST MEDITATION IN LAGUNA BEACH
Tara Meditation
Wednesday, Oct 18
7:30 – 8:30 p.m.

A simple Tara meditation practice with requests & offerings held at OM Meditation Studio.  Buddha Tara is said to be quick to bring results and remove obstacles.

“Tara is a buddha who represents in particular all enlightened beings’ skillful activities, or the means by which they communicate with and guide us according to our ability. Lama Zopa Rinpoche explained: ‘All actions of the Buddha manifest in the female form, Tara, to help sentient beings successfully accomplish both temporal and ultimate happiness.’ Because she represents action – the capacity to act, to cut through obstacles, and to be successful – she also represents courage and power. Contemplating Tara brings quick results in whatever we want and need.”
– from How to Meditate by Ven. Sangye Khadro

All are welcome.

Offered by Gonpo Ludup Study Group.

If you’d like to bring an offering of food or flowers, you are very welcome to do so. Otherwise, just bring yourself!

ABOUT MIFFI

Photo: Langri Tangpa Centre.

Miffi Maxmillion runs the spiritual program at Langri Tangpa Centre in Brisbane, and is an FPMT registered western teacher. She left behind a thriving haute couture and costume business in Melbourne, when her mother Inta Mckimm (who ran LTC) became sick with cancer in 1997. Packing her bags for two weeks, she is still here 19 years later! Miffi was brought up a Buddhist and had the great good fortune to play with Lama Yeshe as a child, and his hook of compassion sustained her through the many rebellious stages of growing up. She readily admits to watching far too much TV and is an avid New Yorker magazine reader. You can check out some of Miffi’s teachings on the Langri Tangpa website here.

“A student of Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa since she was a little girl, Miffi is a wonderful teacher: practical, down to earth, funny, and a genuine practitioner.” – Ven. Robina Courtin

“Miffi is a very precise and clear teacher. Her thorough knowledge of the Dharma via the FPMT lineage is taught in modern day vernacular, making her teachings accessible to both beginner and advanced students alike.” – Ben Aitchison, FPMT student
